Hellbus

Frozen with horror, Sam watched the demon’s nightmare claw arc downwards at Little Bruv in the car-seat, a slashing blur of bone white and devil red, trailing beer foam in its wake…

… and once again, it was the baby’s piercing shriek that shocked Sam’s stuttering brain back to life. Hauling the car-seat clear, Sam hurled himself backwards into the bus, slamming hard into L-Man and Perdita behind, and with a collective yell of terror, all three of them went down, collapsing to the floor of the vehicle in a twisted tangle of limbs.

At the front of the bus, the drunken party crowd began to scream, stumbling back the way they’d come, tumbling out the vehicle’s front door, while at the same time, the demon in the Santa hat roared its fury and made a second lunge for the baby, one monstrous arm thrusting its way through the system of poles and guardrails around the central exit.

Sprawled belly up in the aisle, car-seat hugged tight to his chest, Sam once again scrambled clear of the plunging demonic claw and felt the entire bus shudder as the creature’s hulking torso slammed to a dead stop behind the thick tubular steel of the guardrails. One meathook talon now just a knuckle’s length shy of its shrieking, wailing target, the demon howled in frustration and forced itself forward, jamming its massive red bulk deeper into the rails. In turn, its lunging claw stretched farther, reaching for the car-seat clutched to Sam’s chest, groping for the tiny, bawling figure strapped inside.

“NO!” Sam screamed, trying to back away for a third time but coming up hard against the bus seat behind him. Then again, “NO!” as the reaching claw stretched farther still, talons clattering against the pale blue plastic of the car-seat’s head rest. “GET AWAY FROM HIM! GET AWAY FROM―”

And then the scrabbling claw closed hard around the seat’s roll-bar handle.

Wedged behind the guardrails, the demon creature snarled in glee and began to heave backwards, dragging car-seat and baby towards it. Towards the exit.

With fury and terror flooding his brain, Sam locked both hands tight around the section of handle he still had a grip of. An instant later, Perdita and L-Man came hurtling in behind him to clamp their own hands below Sam’s, and screaming their rage together, the three of them dug in their heels and held on, taking the strain against half a ton of demonic resistance.

The demon huffed and howled. Hunched its shoulders. Heaved harder.

Sam, L-Man, and Perdita clung tighter still, their faces twisting with pain and horror. Somewhere at the edge of his blurring vision, Sam could just make out the tiny shaking figure of Rabbit, curled up in terror in a corner of the bus, still gasping into his crisp bag. Extra help from that quarter would not be arriving anytime soon, that was for damn sure.

Then the demon thrust another bulging arm through the bars. Hooked a second claw around the handle of the car-seat―

―and Sam felt the force they were pulling against double.
